Fandom: Tales of Phantasia
Gender: Male
Age: unspecified, appears to be in late 20s/early 30s
Time Period: Post-Phantasia, Future Dhaos
Wing Color: Green
History: (The below paragraphs are constructed using canon from Narikiri Dungeon X, the Drama CDs, and the side-novel KataReki, none of which have been released in the US. If it's a problem, let me know!)
Dhaos is the ruling prince of Elusion, the largest nation on the planet of Derris-Kharlan. Once upon a time, two much smaller nations named Gudra and Sedam went to war, endangering the life of the Giant Kharlan Tree that provided life to the planet. Dhaos, knowing this, threatened to utterly flatten both nations if they didn’t stop. Naturally, no one listened, and when Gudra fired its Mana Cannon the Giant Kharlan Tree died.
As Derris-Kharlan’s vitality faded, Dhaos decided to travel to other worlds to find a Mana/Great Seed to replace the fallen Tree. Hundreds of mages-- including his lover, Karion-- cast a spell that allowed him to jump across time and space a finite number of times. This kills every single one of them, however, a fact kept secret from him until the deed is done.
Dhaos travels alone for a while, until he crash-lands on the planet of Aselia with only one time/space jump left. He must find a Mana Seed on this planet, in this time period, as he must use his final time/space jump to return home. The time/space jump causes him to collapse of mana exhaustion on the plains of Valhalla, where he is found by a girl named Winona and her friends. They nurse him back to health, and Winona takes him to see Reisen, trying to figure out why the mana levels are so low.
Reisen attacks, severing Winona's arm and causing Dhaos to decide that his only option is to abandon her and team up with a nearby army of demons.
The rest… is history.
Personality: Dhaos has always been the quiet and barely responsive type. ‘…’ is the answer you’re most likely to receive if you ask a personal or awkward question, as opposed to a curt dismissal or blatant avoidance. When he does speak, he does so with the speech of a ruler. Staring at things silently until he figures out what‘s going on is his preferred modus operandi, and he rarely gives long monologues unless angry.
Which, unfortunately, is more likely to happen now than back when he was Prince of Elusion. He hasn’t had a good friend in a long, long time, and his social skills are getting a little rusty. As a ruler, he’s used to people and having to interact with them, but he’s been alone on a world that hates him for at least eight years now. He’s wary of people as a habit now, and while he tries not to hold anything against complete strangers he doesn’t particularly trust them, either.
He dislikes violence in general, but is not at all afraid of resorting to it if necessary: he threatens to crush Gudra and Sedam if they don’t cease and desist, and he almost actually does crush Aselia. Once he starts with the violence, he believes he must continue to give the deaths that have already occurred meaning. In particular, Derris-Kharlan has sacrificed hundreds of lives just to send him on his way, and if he doesn’t obtain a Mana Seed and save the planet all those deaths will have been for nothing. He decides that a few hundred thousand lives on Aselia is a fair price for the life of every single person on his world, even though he knows that is no excuse. He could easily have listened to his conscience and kept trying for negotiation, but frankly Reisen was trying to cover up the mana depletion and things were getting more and more complicated by the moment. And of course, once angered, Dhaos’ ability to rationalize disappears.
Dhaos is terribly lonely after the death of Karion, and while he thinks in his head that she’s his one and only he’s willing to consider entering a romantic relationship with someone else-- provided they’re very close and he’s sure they can make each other happy. Mostly, however, friendship is as far as you'll get. He's a little cold and distant on the outside, but reaching out to him makes him a kind friend-- if a mostly silent one.
Dhaos was beloved by his people as a dignified and kind ruler, though he's hardly the prince of Elusion anymore. Old habits die hard, however: he still won’t answer private or awkward questions, do pointless things, or associate with people he considers asinine. As a byproduct of having been a ruler, Dhaos must always be doing something he considers helpful or productive, and idle time is time wasted. If he doesn’t have something to do-- such as trying to save his planet-- he feels useless.
The stars, being so far away, are the only things that remain constant between worlds. As such, you’re likely to find Dhaos stargazing at night when he has nothing to do, probably trying to find Derris-Kharlan or just looking for something to remind him of home. He’s interested in things like languages, mythology and history, and while talking to people is another story, years of ruling has developed in him a habit of just watching people. He actually understood them quite well, though of course his experiences on Aselia have left these views rather jaded. He is also rather unsettled by the sudden weakness of his magical abilities, and will probably be studying Filial Magic often.
The final years of Dhaos' life were spent getting more and more sure that his journey was nothing but a last-ditch effort at survival from a dying world. He believes that he was always meant to fail, and in fact died believing that he'd caused all of that suffering for nothing. He’s very homesick, but he wouldn’t go back to Derris-Kharlan even if he could: he couldn’t face his people after everything, and honestly he’s just tired. He never wanted to be resurrected, and while he won’t throw his second chance away he still believes happiness is impossible for him. He does want to be happy, however, and will accept any chance to earn his spot in heaven back.
Strengths: Dhaos is, canonically, almost invulnerable to normal weaponry-- in Luceti this will have been removed, but he’s still unafraid to close in with his fists and is physically fit enough to keep out of harm’s way. His real strength in combat is his magic: Between unassisted flight, huge lasers, energy fields, and the usual plethora of high-level artes (Explosion, Cyclone, Tidal Wave, Ground Dasher, etc.), Dhaos is a force to be reckoned with. The military officials of Gudra measure the power of the entire Mana Cannon against Dhaos alone, with the conclusion that only ‘maybe’ Dhaos would lose. He’s killable on Aselia only because he’s suffering from mana depletion, and because the heroes are wielding a reality-breaking sword.
Dhaos is determined to accomplish anything he has set out to do, at any cost: while he knows killing thousands of people even to save his own planet is wrong, he goes through with it anyway. It doesn’t matter to him if the entire world hates him, or if Karion would have hated him for it, or even if he feels like garbage and goes to hell. As long as Derris-Kharlan is saved, he’ll do it. He doesn’t expect to be saved along with the rest of his world.
He’s very much the rational type, which is ironically what leads to his fall from grace in the first place. In addition to this, it’s rather difficult to be a ruler for very long without being some manner of intelligent, wise and insightful, and he's not all that withholding if asked for advice.
He hasn't associated with people normally in a long time, but if he can get past his feelings he actually understands them quite well, and has a natural desire to help people.
Weaknesses: Dhaos is, physically, not as strong as he is magically-- his blatant lack of muscle mass ought to be ample evidence of that-- and for whatever reason, he’s critically weak against the spell Indignation. When it’s used on him for the first time, he’s in enough pain to warrant wasting his final time/space jump to escape. His magic was his main strength, and with that at 50% he’s not keen on getting into fights anytime soon.
More crippling are his psychological weaknesses. After years of loneliness and a constant string of bad luck, Dhaos carefully toes the line between sanity and madness. He knows in his head that humans are not inherently evil, and in fact they share their weaknesses with his own loved ones, but he can’t stop the feeling in his heart that everything is their fault. Perhaps in a subconscious effort to justify this, he’s come to believe that all people, everywhere, are evil at heart. (“If there is evil in this world, it lurks in the hearts of men.”) Obviously this tends to get in the way of interaction with others. He's leaning a little more toward the 'sane' side after death, but he's still troubled and likely to go off the deep end if something especially stressful happens.
Dhaos actually dislikes war, but his desperation has made him increasingly violent and volatile, and after being rejected by Reisen he’s all too quick to assume that no one will listen to him. This causes him to allow fights to happen when someone makes any sort of indication that they want one, when in fact words might have sufficed. He knows better than to get himself killed, but he's much easier to provoke than he used to be.
He follows his head instead of his heart, which is what causes his downfall. If he believes that the absolute only way to accomplish his goals is to, say, throw his lot in with the local demon army, that’s what he’ll do. What makes this worse is that he ignores his own needs when something/someone he loves is in danger: even if he feels in his heart that he’s doing something abhorrent and immoral, he’ll keep going. And eventually, he becomes desensitized to the feeling.
All of this has worn down his once-substantial emotional endurance. He may have put aside his suffering for the sake of his world, but now that Derris-Kharlan has been saved Dhaos is unlikely to be as ‘selfless’ as he was on Aselia. If he believes something is likely to bring him any more pain, he'll avoid it.
If something happens to make him snap, he’ll yell, rant and fire lasers until the problem has been solved or he calms down.

First Person:
1. What goals do you want to accomplish in your life?
For most of my life, all I wanted was to protect Elusion. For the final stretch of my life, my entire existence was devoted to searching for a Mana Seed to bring back to Derris-Kharlan. I never did... If I still can, I want to continue looking. If not, I...
2. Is it better to have loved and lost, or to have never loved at all?
...I believe the most concise way to answer this would be with an old saying: "Whatever does not kill you makes you stronger." Even if everything you love is taken from you, the memories of the strength that love brought you will never fade. And that is a powerful thing. Once upon a time, I was happy. If I can protect that happiness for other people...
3. How much do you value power? What is the limit of what you'd do to possess it?
...Power for the sake of power is meaningless. But the power to attain your goals... If it is something I need, then I need it. If seeking it makes me the Demon King, but will give me the power to save Derris-Kharlan, then you may call me the Demon King all you want. I will wear the title proudly.
4. Do you have any regrets? If so, what are they?
...I waited too long to ask Karion to marry me. I did not stop Gudra and Sedam when I had the chance. My nation is unlikely to see its leader again. My desperation and frustration grew out of control until I had to kill everyone related in any way to Magitech. I put a teenage boy, much younger than I am, in my position, and forced him to make my decisions. And after everything I have done-- and have not done-- in the end, I could not even save Derris-Kharlan. After everything, I failed. Everyone back home, everyone who has been waiting for so long... What do I not regret?
5. Has there ever been a time in your life when you questioned your motives or morals? If so, what was it?
There have been times when I have been forced to choose between individual lives and the well-being of my nation. Those choices are never easy.
...
...On Aselia, at first. I had already weighed my options and their consequences by the time I approached Jamir, but that did not stop reality from crashing down on me when Winona's friend Rhea was killed as a result of my orders. And no matter how foolish or selfish humans may seem, they physically appear no different from my people. But over time, I began to see more and more of the same shortcomings, and it became less about my ability to sacrifice them and more about my ability to take the strain without cracking.
In the end... During the final battle... I realized that I had put Cress in my position. Sacrifice everything you love, and another, nameless planet, or watch your own die. And underneath all the pressure and pain, I finally decided that all of the sorrow was no longer worth it.
I wonder now whether that decision was for the best.
Third Person: Dhaos stood on the roof of the apartment building, looking out over the town of Luceti. How strange, to be alive again… He never, never imagined he would ever find himself in any sort of civilization again, isolated or not. He could not decide how he felt about it. On one hand, being surrounded by friendly people again was such a relief, a welcome change from the years of solitude spent in a distant castle leading an army of demons against a world that hated him. He was a prince, and a prince was a man of the people. Among people was where he belonged.
On the other hand, Dhaos had not been a prince for some time now, and he would never again see people the way he once had. He felt distant and unconnected to everyone else, and sometimes felt uncomfortable at having to share his world with others again. It was a foolish and unreasonable feeling, and so he tried to set it aside, but the memories would not leave: he knew he would see the same fatal shortcomings in these people as he had seen on Aselia, and on Derris-Kharlan, and he could not help but wonder if he would be forced to see another world’s fate needlessly doomed.
Although perhaps for this world, that would not be a particularly bad thing. Underneath his cloak, Dhaos clenched a fist. It was horribly hypocritical of him, but he did not believe that the Malnosso had any authority to interfere in the lives and existences of others.
The angel hopped down from the roof, carefully lowering himself to the ground with what power he had left. He had been allowed to keep the emerald energy wings he'd inherited as an angel, but the rest of his abilities seemed to have had their power cut in half. This was incredibly disconcerting, and he would have to spend some time getting reacquainted with his shortcomings before he killed himself by accident.
Kill himself... He had never really considered ending his own life, but when the Heroes of Eternity had arrived he had been glad to finally get his retribution. There was no point in suicide, no matter how despondent and alone one ever was. He had never wanted to be resurrected, and certainly not where he was likely to be kidnapped, experimented on and generally treated as something less than he was. But he was here. If the gods saw fit to bring him back, he would simply have to accept it and forge his own fate.
